I rode the Taipei metro to Tamsui yesterday, which is similar to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, only way more crowded and Taiwanese. I also stopped at the Shilin night market, where I saw tiny children walking along in a halloween parade. This morning, I took the slow long distance train to Hualien, 3 hours south of Taipei on the east coast. I had a friendly young kid sitting next to me who taught me to say a few things in Chinese. Really, all I need is "nee how" for hello, and "shee shee" for thank you. I rented a bike and rode to the ocean, near the Hualien airforce base. 10 different fighter jet looking things took off while I was there. I rode my bike back and got VERY lost. A nice young girl on a scooter escorted me all the way back to town, so nice! I yelled "shee shee" several times before she sped away. I saw the same kid from the train at the night market (where I ate vegetables!!). He ran up to me to say hi before he had to leave with his friends. I sort of feel famous, everyone is helpful and stares at me all the time, in a nice way. Tomorrow is Taroko Gorge!
